The familiar Nutcracker story that's typically told through ballet is presented in a whole new way in this film by Russian director Andrei Konchalovsky. It features dialogue, the classical music of Tchaikovsky paired with newly created lyrics, and eight new songs from the Oscar-winning Sir Tim Rice of The Lion King and Jesus Christ Superstar fame. The story opens with fairly traditional scenery and establishes the basic plot of a young girl, Mary (Elle Fanning), whose dull Christmas evening is suddenly brightened by the arrival of her uncle Albert (Nathan Lane). With Albert's exciting present of a dollhouse complete with several dolls and a nutcracker (Charlie Rowe), it quickly becomes evident that this is no traditional Nutcracker. Besides the dialogue and the rather surprising addition of words to some of Tchaikovsky's most famous Nutcracker melodies, the story becomes increasingly adventurous. It plays almost like an action film as Mary and her brother (Aaron Michael Drozin) travel to the mouse kingdom, where they battle the Rat King (John Turturro) and his mother the Rat Queen (Frances de la Tour) in order to reverse the spell that's turned a prince into the wooden nutcracker. Purists who love the traditionally produced Nutcracker ballet will likely hate this new version of the story, but there's definitely a case to be made for making the story more accessible and understandable to modern audiences. While some will be horrified that classic Tchaikovsky tunes are, in their minds, cheapened by the addition of lyrics, others will tout the move as a way of bringing an awareness of classical music to a whole new audience. There's no doubt as to the high quality of the original songs written by Tim Rice--it just depends on your perspective as to whether they belong in the film or not. While it may not be at all what you're expecting, this version of The Nutcracker is an engaging, suspenseful story that's good holiday entertainment for the whole family. (Ages 7 and older) --
